Goodreads is one of my favourite websites. Why? It's a treasure trove of quotes.
Last night's conversation about how each of our Wednesday evening artists have found their own painting/drawing styles made me curious about quotes on "Being Yourself". Well, it's my lucky day! This artist is completely new to watercolours. Below she is sketching her second picture.
Her first?

Here it is! Her first watercolour. A wonderful loose style And, it comes easy to her. Good job!
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else
is the greatest accomplishment.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

The artist below found her whimsical style years ago. The more you look, the more you see. There is only one more thing to do on this painting of her grandson - the background. Doesn't her painting exude the love she has for him?
“A friend is someone who gives you total freedom to be yourself-
and especially to feel,
or not feel.
Whatever you happen to be feeling at any moment is fine with them.
That's what real love amounts to -
letting a person be what he really is.”
Jim Morrison

And, finally a little Ralph Waldo Emerson to pair with the painting below:
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else
is the greatest accomplishment.”
As a class, we have enjoyed watching the progress of the graphite sketch below. As this artist began to understand the value of making your darks dark enough, her sketch came alive. Figuring out how to make the beans in the foreground out of focus and then some on the table and in the cup totally in focus, was a huge accomplishment. And, now that she's figured it out once, she will be able to draw on those skills forever. Like riding a bicycle.
